Pioneers Advance to Semifinals of SBC Tournament

DENTON, Texas - Denver defeated South Alabama, 4-2, this morning in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Denton, Texas. DU improves to 10-10 and advances to the semifinals tonight against Middle Tennessee or Western Kentucky. South Alabama falls to 11-12 with the loss.

DU claimed the crucial doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Martin Zimmermann (Ludwigshafen, Germany) and Andrew Landwerlen (Las Cruces, N.M.) won 8-4 at No. 1 and David Simson (Vienna, Austria) and Ravjot Dhatt (Victoria, British Columbia) clinched the point with an 8-5 win at No. 3.

South Alabama took a 2-1 lead with wins at  No. 6 and No. 1 singles, but DU stormed back with three straight singles wins to clinch the 4-2 win. Yannick Weihs (Guntramsdorf, Austria) won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, Landwerlen won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 and Benny Althaus (Saarbrucken, Germany) ended the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3.

The win ended a three-match losing streak for the Pioneers.

Tonight's semifinal match is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. MT.
