COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman Simona Castro Lazo (Santiago, Chile) claimed her first event title on floor with a 9.850 and sophomore Brianna Artemev (Arvada, Colo.) tied for first on bars with a 9.800 as No. 16 Denver finished in third place at a quad meet featuring host Maryland, West Virginia and Rutgers at the Comcast Center on Saturday.
"Tonight was a tough meet for us, but I think that we will be able to remember the core values of our team and get back on track," said head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart. "I think our team learned something tonight that we will be able to take with us throughout the season."
Denver (6-2) started the meet strong, posting a 48.550 on bars to lead after the first rotation, with Artemev leading the way with a 9.800. The Pioneers were forced to count two falls on the balance beam in rotation two and fell to third place with a score of 96.100.
Castro Lazo and fellow freshman Jaleesa Wilson (Cary, N.C.) posted a 9.850 and 9.825, respectively, as DU scored a 48.300 on floor in the third rotation. The Pioneers posted a 48.550 on vault to finish with a final score of 192.850.
West Virginia edged out Maryland 194.600-193.925 for first place, and Rutgers finished in fourth place with a score of 190.550.
Next, the Pioneers will travel to Provo, Utah for a tri-meet against host BYU and Utah State on Saturday at 7 p.m. MT.
