Sam Brittain (Calgary, Alberta) made 28 saves in a strong collegiate debut.
Dan Lawson scored for the Catamounts and Rob Madore matched Brittain with 28 saves. DUU begins its 2010-11 season 1-0-1, while Vermont is 0-1-1.
"I thought we made progress tonight," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "We did a better job maintaining puck possession and I'm really happy for Sam. I like what I saw out there and I like where we're heading."
After a scoreless opening period, Shore buried a Jason Zucker (Las Vegas) feed at 3:06 of the second period. Lawson tallied the equalizer when his shot was redirected off DU defenseman Paul Phillips (Darien, Ill.) past a surprised Brittain at 18:06.
The Catamounts outshot the Pioneers 14-9 in the third period and overtime after DU held momentum much of the game. Brittain turned in good performance after a sub-par effort against Lethbridge last Sunday. The freshman stopped five shots in the first period, nine in the second, 13 in the third and one in overtime. Shore capped a great weekend with his third goal in the season-opening series.
Denver and Vermont each had 29 shots on goal. Both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play.
