Pioneers Down San Jose, 3-1

Box Score

DENVER - Junior Jarod Stigall (Plano, Texas) netted two goals and tallied an assist to lead the University of Denver men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over San Jose State at CIBER Field on Sunday afternoon.

"I think we showed a lot of character today," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "Sundays are always tough after having played on Friday, and it was impressive to come back from being down to score three goals against a very good San Jose State team."

After a hard-fought scoreless first half, the Spartans opened the scoring in the 55th minute when Josh Boemecke beat senior goalkeeper Joe Willis (St. Louis, Mo.) to give the Spartans (7-7-2, 1-4-2 MPSF) a 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers (6-5-4, 3-2-2 MPSF) responded in the 62nd minute when sophomore Alex Tarnoczi (Castle Rock, Colo.) served the ball to senior Kellan Christensen (Layton,Utah). Christensen then made a quick touch pass to Stigall, who buried his shot to make it 1-1.

Denver struck again in the 77th minute when junior Alex DeCosta (Dallas, Texas) made a pass to Christensen in the center of the box. Christensen then found Stigall on a touch pass for the finish to take a 2-1 lead.

After a red card in the 86th minute to Joe O'Connor left the Spartans with just 10 men, Denver iced the game, when Stigall passed to freshman Kegan Harkenrider (Fort Wayne, Ind.) from the right side. Harkenrider then found Christensen open in the box for the final goal.

Willis earned the win in goal after making seven saves on the afternoon.

The Pioneers return to action when they travel to take on Cal State Bakersfield on Friday, Oct. 29.
