Pioneers Sweep Ragin Cajuns in Sun Belt Volleyball Action

DENVER - Led by a career-high12-kills from freshman Colleen King (Steamboat Springs, Colo.), the University of Denver volleyball team (8-11, 2-3 SBC) won its second match in a row, sweeping Sun Belt Conference foe Louisiana-Lafayette (11-8, 2-2 SBC) 3-0 (27-25, 25-7, 25-20)  on Sunday afternoon in Hamilton Gymnasium.

"I think we are starting to turn the corner as a team," said head coach Beth Kuwata. "We continued with our business-like mentality from Friday evening and we played some great team volleyball. I am very proud of the way our girls responded when we were down in the first set and of how they kept their composure and were able to finish."

Along with King's 12 kills and three blocks, freshman Brea Muhle (Columbus, Neb.) added nine kills to go along with freshman Alex Turgeon's (Cherry Hills Village, Colo.) eight kills and three blocks. Setter Kresson Vreeman (Raymond, Minn.) led the way with 35 assists to go along with her six kills and six digs, while senior libero Kacie Wikierak (Crystal Lake, Ill.) finished with 19 digs. Also contributing defensively was sophomore Lyndi Johnson (Flower Mound, Texas) with 12 digs.

After battling to a 27-25 victory in set one, the Pioneers played an inspired game in set two, fueled by a 54.2 team hitting percentage and kills from King (4), Vreeman (3) and Turgeon (3) to win 25-7.

Kerrilyn Lazare led the Ragin Cajuns with eight kills, while Toncie White added seven hills.

Denver remains at home to host three straight Sun Belt Conference matches in Hamilton Gymnasium, continuing with Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. and Arkansas State on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 12 p.m. The Pioneers close out their five-match home stand on Tuesday, Oct. 12 against North Texas at 7 p.m.
