Denver Beats Lake Superior State, 6-3

Box Score DENVER - Sophomore Drew Shore (Denver) netted his first career hat trick as No. 12/13 Denver opened its Denver Cup title defense with a 6-3 win over Lake Superior State tonight at Magness Arena.

Drew Shore added an assist for his first career four-point game and Kyle Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta), Beau Bennett (Gardena, Calif.) and Dustin Jackson (Omaha, Neb.) also scored in the win.

Denver (9-4-2) received 25 saves from freshman Sam Brittain (Calgary, Alberta) and Lake Superior State's (5-8-2) Brian Mahoney-Wilson stopped 34 shots in the loss.

Kyle Ostrow staked DU to a 1-0 lead after the first period when he scored off a pass from his brother Shawn Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta) at 14:15 of the first period.

Lake Superior State tied the goal on a shorthanded breakaway goal by Zach Trotman at 3:10 of the second period.

Nick Shore (Denver) made a great play in the neutral zone to set up Bennett, who ripped a wrist shot past Mahoney-Wilson and off the left post at 17:18 to give DU a 2-1 lead.

Drew Shore scored from Paul Phillips (Darien, Ill.) and Bennett with three seconds left in the third period to make it 3-1.

Rick Schofield cut the DU lead to 3-2 with a rebound goal at 3:26 of the third period, but Jackson was credited with his first goal since 2008-09 when his shot bounced off Trotman past Mahoney-Wilson. Anthony Maiani (Shelby Township, Mich.) and Drew Shore earned assists on the goal.

Drew Shore scored from Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) at 14:41 and he completed the hat trick with a power-play goal from David Makowski (Wildwood, Mo.) and Maiani at 18:20.

Denver outshot Lake Superior State, 40-28, and went 2-for-5 on the power play. Lake Superior State was 0-for-2 with the man-advantage.

The Pioneers host Air Force tomorrow night in the championship game of the Denver Cup Classic. The Falcons beat Clarkson 2-1 earlier today.

Notes: Denver has won five consecutive games. Bennett has two consecutive multi-point games. Drew Shore has a three-game point streak and leads DU with 20 points on 11 goals and nine assists. He had 19 points (5g, 14a) last season. Brittain has started 12 straight games for Denver. The Pioneers gun for their 15th Denver Cup title tomorrow night.
