Emotions For Martin Lead Pioneers to 4-1 Win

Box Score DENVER - Sophomore Drew Shore (Denver, Colo.) tallied a career-high three points and freshman Sam Brittain (Calgary, Alberta) made 33 saves as No. 13 Denver defeated WCHA rival Colorado College 4-1 on Friday night in front of 6,033 fans at Magness Arena.

The Pioneers won their first game without Jesse Martin (Edmonton, Alberta), who suffered a season-ending injury at North Dakota on Oct. 30 and improve to 4-3-2, 3-1-1 WCHA. DU also takes an early lead in the battle for the Gold Pan Trophy, while CC falls to 3-5-1, 1-4-0.

"It was certainly nice to win tonight after a difficult week," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "Jesse Martin was on the minds of our entire team tonight and we won the game this game for him. I was glad to see us improve on the power play and I think that overall we played a good game. Sam (Brittain) shut the door when we needed him to."

After a scoreless first period, Shore scored his sixth goal of the season on the power play to give the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage at 5:12 of the second period. Anthony Maiani (Shelby Township, Mich.) and Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla.) assisted on the play.

John Lee (Moorhead, Minn.) scored DU's second power-play goal of the night at 15:52 from David Makowski (Wildwood, Minn.) and Luke Salazar (Thornton, Colo.).

Salazar tacked on another goal 33 seconds later with Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Shore assisting.

After a Stephen Schultz goal at 14:49 of the third period, Zucker took a pass from Shore and capitalized on an empty net with 8.3 seconds remaining in the game to give the Pioneers a 4-1 victory.

DU was 2-for-4 on the power play, tying its season total for power play goals. CC was 1-for-6 on the power play and Tiger goalie Joe Howe made 25 saves.

The home-and-home series continues tomorrow as the Pioneers travel to CC. Puck drop is 7:07 p.m.

Notes: DU honored Martin as its seventh man prior to the game and signs and banners for the senior center decorated Magness Arena. Salazar and Zucker each recorded two-point efforts. DU declined a penalty shot at 7:41 of the third period. The Pioneers ended CC's five-game unbeaten streak at Magness Arena. DU regained possession of the Gold Pan Trophy last year after CC held it from 2007-09.
