DENVER - No. 19 Denver finished with a 195.250 to place second at the IGI Chicago Style Invite on Friday night at the Navy Pier in Chicago, Ill.
Sophomore Brianna Artemev (Arvada, Colo.) tied for first on beam with a 9.850, while senior Kelley Hennigan (The Woodlands, Texas) finished in third place in the all-around with a 39.100.
No. 10 Nebraska took first place with a season-high 196.475, while No. 20 Illinois took third with a score of 194.225 and Iowa finished in fourth place with a score of 193.625.
"I'm very proud of the character, team work and excellence that we showed tonight," said head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart. "We still have room for improvement, but I was impressed with the mental toughness the team showed against some very strong competition."
Junior Kristina Coccia (Bethlehem, Pa.) scored a 9.850 on floor as the Pioneers (10-3) opened the meet with a 48.750. Illinois posted a season-high 49.150 on vault to take an early lead, followed by Nebraska in second with a 48.850 and Iowa in fourth place (48.450).
Freshman Simona Castro Lazo (Santiago, Chile) recorded a career-high 9.775 on vault as Denver ended the second rotation with a 97.675, just behind the Cornhuskers, who were in first place with a 97.925. Iowa moved up to third place with a 97.350, and Illinois was in fourth with a 96.450.
DU remained in second place after posting a 48.675 on bars, bringing its total to 146.350 after three rotations. Nebraska held the lead with a 147.175, as Iowa stayed in third with a 146.175 and Illinois had a 145.175.
The Pioneers wrapped up the meet on beam, where Artemev's 9.850 helped the Pioneers to an event score of 48.900. The Cornhuskers scored a meet-high 49.300 on vault to seal their first-place victory. Illinois posted a 49.050 on floor to finish in third place in front of Iowa.
Next, the Pioneers return home to host SEMO, Boise State and Seattle Pacific at the Burnsley Invitational on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.
