No. 60 BYU Edges No. 53 DU, 4-3

DENVER - The No. 53 Denver men's tennis team's six-match winning streak ended with a 4-3 heartbreaking loss to No. 60 BYU late Friday at CAC-Inverness. BYU improves to 7-0 with the win, while DU falls to 6-1 with its first loss.

"We lost a very hard-fought match tonight," DU head coach Danny Westerman said. "The efforts were tremendous, but unfortunately the execution was not. This will be a good reminder for us the rest of the year to make sure we are doing the right things daily in practice. We are a young team and we will grow more from this match than any of the previous six wins."

BYU claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Each team won three singles matches and the Cougars earned the win with a win from Cassidy Mears at No. 3 singles. Mears defeated Fabio Biasion (Velbert, Germany) 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 for the win.

Yannick Weihs (Guntramsdorf, Austria), Andrew Landwerlen (Las Cruces, N.M.) and Jens Vorkefeld (Ostercappeln, Germany) won their respective singles matches for the Pioneers. Weihs beat No. 117 Thomas Shubert at No. 1 singles, Landwerlen stayed unbeaten at 7-0 with a win over Roman Warias at No. 5 and Vorkefeld beat Spencer Smith in three sets at No. 6.

DU returns to action on Feb. 12 against Drake.
