DENVER - No. 63 Denver rebounded after a tough loss to BYU on Friday with a convincing 6-1 win over Drake today at Pinehurst Country Club. Denver improves to 7-1 with the win, while Drake falls to 2-2.
Denver won the doubles point and five of six singles matches to avenge the heart-breaking 4-3 loss to the Cougars on Feb. 12.
"It is nice to bounce back today with a win after Friday's tough loss to BYU," DU head coach Danny Westerman said. "With 13 days between matches, we have a great opportunity to work on a few things and take another step forward with our development."
Andrew Landwerlen (Las Cruces, N.M.) and David Simson (Vienna, Austria) win at No. 1 doubles, DU needed a Yannick Weihs (Guntramsdorf, Austria) and Jens Vorkefeld (Ostercappeln, Germany) 8-6 win at No. 2 to clinch the point.
Simson made it 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over James McKie at No. 2 and Enej Bonin (Kopar, Slovenia) made it 3-0 with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Jean Erasmus at No. 4.
Fabio Biasion (Velbert, Germany) clinched the win for DU with hard-fought, three-set win over Guilherme Marsiglia at No. 3.
Vorkefeld and Landwerlen also claimed singles wins for the Pioneers.
DU returns to action on Feb. 27 against Arizona.
