DENVER - The No. 74 Denver Pioneers ended a three-match losing streak with a 4-1 win over UC Santa Barbara tonight at Denver Country Club. DU improves to 3-6, while UCSB falls to 2-6.
After losing the doubles point, DU quickly tied the match with a win from Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) at No. 1 singles. Schnoy beat Sofia Novak 6-2, 6-1.
Julia Bauregger (Klagenfurt, Austria), Sophia Bergner (Schechen, Germany) and Emma Isberg (Tyreso, Sweden) then claimed wins prior to the finish of the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches to secure the win.
"We fought extremely hard tonight," DU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "We are proud of the way that we bounced back from a tough doubles point. We faced a lot of adversity tonight, and were able to overcome it to get the win. Ute Schnoy did a great job of winning quickly to get the point back from our doubles loss. That gaves a lot of confidence, and we were able to step up at three other spots.
DU plays in-state rival tomorrow Colorado in Boulder.
"We look forward to the challenge against a very tough Colorado team tomorrow morning," Wurtzman said. "We hope to build off this win and continue to improve the rest of the season"
