No. 18 Denver Defeats Air Force

DENVER - No. 18 Denver defeated Air Force by a score of 193.900-191.725 in Hamilton Gymnasium on Monday night.  Senior Kelley Hennigan (The Woodlands, Texas) won the all-around with a score of 39.025.

Led by Hennigan and sophomore Brianna Artemev (Arvada, Colo.), who posted individual vault scores of 9.800, the Pioneers took a 48.875-48.125 lead over Air Force after the first rotation. Artemev and junior Amanda Johanson (Park City, Utah) improved Denver's lead to 96.825-96.050 with individual scores of 9.775 on the bars in the second rotation. The Pioneers shined in the third rotation, tying their season-best beam score of 49.000 as Sanford and Hennigan each recorded scores of 9.825 to lead Denver, while freshman Simona Castro Lazo (Santiago, Chile) posted a career-high 9.800.  Finally, Denver solidified the victory with a 48.075 on the floor exercise, led by junior Kristina Coccia (Bethlehem, Pa.), who scored a 9.800.

"Our team was tired coming off Friday night's win," head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said. "We did have a great performance on balance beam, however, and our team worked together really well and kept a great attitude."

Former Pioneer and Olympian Jessica Lopez was DU's guest of honor. Lopez was the third Olympian to be honored by the Pioneers, as Alicia Sacramone was Denver's special guest on Jan. 23, followed by Sasha Artemev on Feb. 19.

Denver returns to action on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. MT when they travel to Lincoln, Neb. for the Masters Classic.  The Pioneers will face Arizona, West Virginia, and host Nebraska.
