Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS - After three years of frustration, the Gold Pan Trophy is coming back to Denver. The Pioneers jumped to a 3-0 lead after the first period and reclaimed its first Gold Pan Trophy since 2006 with a commanding 7-3 win over in-state rival Colorado College tonight at World Arena.
Kyle Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta) scored twice and Jesse Martin (Edmonton, Alberta), Matt Glasser (Calgary, Alberta) and Joe Colborne (Calgary, Alberta), Brian Gifford (Moorhead, Minn.) and Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.) also scored as DU wins the season series 2-1-1 against the Tigers. DU improves to 25-7-4 overall and 19-5-4 in the WCHA. CC falls to 18-15-3, 12-13-3.
Marc Cheverie (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) made 33 stops and wins the WCHA goaltending title with a 2.05 goals against average in league play. Maiani, Martin, Colborne, Rakhshani and Tyler Ruegsegger (Lakewood) each tallied multi-point efforts in the dominating win.
"We stuck to our game and we were the better team tonight," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "We controlled the puck in the offensive zone and had a really strong first 30 minutes. I'm really proud of our seniors because they have waited a long time to get the Gold Pan back to Denver."
Martin, Nate Dewhurst (Johnston, Iowa) and Ostrow setup DU's first three goals with nifty passes. Martin left a long drop pass that Ostrow one-timed at the right circle and Dewhurst's no-look backhanded pass from the right corner gave Glasser a tap-in goal. Ostrow then laced a cross-ice pass that Martin buried from the low slot.
Colborne netted a Rakhshani past Tyler O'Brien (23 saves), who relieved Joe Howe (5 saves) after the three-goal first period. DU killed off a CC two-man advantage and Ostrow scored his second of the night unassisted from the low slot. Gifford lit the lamp from Colborne as DU gained a 6-0 lead.
Mike Testwuide finally put the Tigers on the board with a breakaway tally at 13:25 of the second period. Tyler Johnson and Testwuide scored in the third before Rakhshani iced the win with a power-play goal with 4:02 remaining.
CC won the shot battle, 36-35, but went 0-for-4 on the power play. DU went 1-for-3 with the man-advantage.
