Pioneers Place Second at SBCs

NEW ORLEANS - Denver's quest for its first Sun Belt Conference men's tennis championship was halted in a 4-1 loss to Troy this afternoon at the New Orleans Tennis Center.

No. 61 Troy won the doubles point and three of the first four singles matches to claim the league title and automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Despite the loss, No. 34 Denver is still expected to earn an at-large berth into the NCAAs.

Branko Weber and Xavier Masson defeated Denver's Jens Vorkefeld (Ostercappeln, Germany) and Yannick Weihs (Guntramsdorf, Austria) 9-8(5) in the deciding match for the doubles point.

Enej Bonin (Koper, Slovenia) tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Weber at No. 3 singles. Mario Rolemberg gave Troy a 2-1 lead with a 7-6(2), 6-0 win over Vorkefeld at No. 5 singles and L Henrique Grangeiro made it 3-1 with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Weihs at No. 1 singles.

Masson clinched the win with a three-set win over Fabio Biasion (Velbert, Germany) at No. 4 singles.

The NCAA Men's Tennis Regionals are set for May 14-16 at campus sites.
