MANKATO, Minn. - No. 6 Denver rallied for a dramatic 4-3 overtime win tonight at Minnesota State. The Pioneers trailed 3-0 at the 2:41 mark of the second period, but scored four straight goals including
Dustin Jackson's (Omaha, Neb.) game-winner 21 seconds into overtime to earn the comeback win. Denver captured three important WCHA points with tonight's win and last night's 4-4 overtime tie.
The Pioneers, who are unbeaten at 3-0-3 in their last six games, improve to 14-5-5 overall and 10-3-3 WCHA. Minnesota State falls to 10-9-5, 4-9-3.
"It was certainly a great win for us, considering the way we played the first two periods," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "Our team continues to show a great ability to come from behind. We do need to have better starts to our games and we can do that starting next Friday against Alaska Anchorage."
Chase Grant converted a DU turnover and beat Adam Murray (24 saves) high to the stick side for the game's first goal at 5:12 of the first period.
Channing Boe's blast from the left faceoff circle redirected off a DU defenseman past Murray at 1:52 of the second period and Eriah Hayes scored from the low slot 49 seconds later to make it 3-0.
Beau Bennett (Gardena, Calif.) started the DU comeback by burying a great cross-ice pass from Nick Shore (Denver) on the power play at 5:30 of the middle period. Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla.) earned the second assist on DU's goal.
Bennett returned the favor to Nick Shore when he setup the freshman at 11:31 of the third period. Chris Nutini (Centennial, Colo.) earned an assist on the Nick Shore goal.
John Lee (Moorhead, Minn.) fed Jason Zucker (Las Vegas) on a breakaway at 13:31 to tie the game at 3-3. Drew Shore (Denver) earned the second assist on Zucker's team-leading 16th goal.
Jackson buried Kyle Ostrow's (Calgary, Alberta) pass from behind the net past Phil Cook (26 saves) for the game-winning overtime goal. Anthony Maiani (Shelby Township, Mich.) earned his team-leading 18th assist on the play.
The Pioneers outshot Minnesota State, 30-27, and both teams were held scoreless on the power play.
DU returns to action on Jan. 21-22 against Alaska Anchorage.
Notes: Denver is second in the WCHA with 23 points. The Pioneers are tied for third in the PairWise Rankings. DU is 10-1-3 in its last 14 games. Zucker leads the WCHA in league points (22) and goals (16). Murray improved to 4-1 with his third straight win.
Kyle Ostrow has 2-4=6 during his four-game point streak.
