Tyler Gron and Erik Higby each had goals for the NMU. Kyle Kaunisto, Kyle Follmer, and Justin Florek all had one assist each. Jared Coreau stopped 44 shots for the Wildcats.

"We looked pretty good from the beginning of the game and we were really clicking on offense for the majority of three periods," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "[Jared Coreau] was just outstanding, though. Simply outstanding."

Denver fell behind early after Gron took a pass from Kaunisto and put NMU on the board at 4:47 in the first period. Higby added another goal for the Wildcats at 7:31 from Justin Florek and the Pioneers went in to the first intermission down 2-0.

The Pioneers put the puck in the net midway through the second period when Knowlton set up Kyle Ostrow for a shorthanded goal at 10:24. Denver outshot NMU 22-1 in the period.

Denver had a chance early in the third period to tie the game with a Luke Salazar (Thorton, Colo.) penalty shot 53 seconds into the frame, but Salazar missed wide.

Makowski tied the game at 2-2 later in the third period with a power-play goal at 10:02 from Kyle Ostrow and the score remained 2-2 at the end of regulation.

DU got two shots on goal in overtime and finished the game on the power play. NMU had one shot in the extra session, but neither team was able to get the puck in the net.

The Pioneers went 1-for-9 on the power play and the Wildcats were 0-for-5 with the man-advantage.

Denver returns to action at Minnesota State Jan. 14-15.

Notes: Senior Joey Brehm (Edina, Minn.) made his first career regular-season appearance for Denver. DU is second in the latest PairWise rankings. Kyle Ostrow needs nine points to join the Pioneer Century Club for 100-point scorers. DU was without its top two scorers Drew Shore (Denver) and Jason Zucker (Las Vegas), who are competing for Team USA at the IIHF World Junior Championship in New York. Beau Bennett (Gardena, Calif.) missed his fifth straight game with a right knee injury.
