Box Score DENVER - The University of Denver men's soccer team fell to No. 25 Cal State Bakersfield 1-0 on Friday night at CIBER Field.
"In the first half, I think they had more opportunities in the final third, but we played well," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "We had a couple decent breakouts in transition. We defended very well and didn't give them anything dangerous, no serious looks.
"In the second half, the guys really came out and responded. It was a good performance by Denver today. The late goal was just disappointing. We have to bounce back on Sunday and give ourselves a chance to play in the postseason."
Denver (4-9-3, 2-5-1 MPSF) created chances, especially in the second half. Sophomore midfielder Zach Bolden (Denver, Colo.) fired a rocket that ricocheted off the left post in the 75th minute. Senior midfielder Jarod Stigall (Plano, Texas) had a header inside the box in the 85th minute that was stopped by CSUB goalkeeper Eric Shannon, and drilled the crossbar from 30 yards out less than a minute later.
With the game still knotted at 0-0, CSUB's Scott Luedtke sent a cross from the left corner. Freshman goalkeeper Oliver Brown (Louisville, Ky.) attempted to intercept the service, but it rebounded to Gyasi Zardes, who increased his NCAA leading goal total to 17 for the Roadrunners (10-2-4, 6-2-0 MPSF).
The Pioneers conclude their regular season home schedule at CIBER Field with a matchup against Seattle on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT. Denver will honor its seniors Kellan Christensen (Layton, Utah), Matt Kirby (Beaumont, Texas), Bob Miltenberger (Southlake, Texas) and Jarod Stigall (Plano, Texas) prior to the game.
