CC Tops Denver, 3-2

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The No. 2/3 University of Denver's eight-game unbeaten streak came to an end Friday night following a 3-2 loss to No. 20 Colorado College before a sellout crowd of 7,571 at World Arena in Colorado Springs.

With the loss the Pioneers move to 16-6-5 overall and 12-4-3 in the WCHA. Colorado College goes to 16-12-1, 10-9-0.

"We put ourselves in a hole right off the bat and took some frustrating penalties," Denver head coach George Gwozdecky said. "We were in position to score, but we have to shake this one off and get ready for tomorrow."

Drew Shore (Denver) and Kyle Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta) scored for the Pioneers. Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) tallied two assists and Adam Murray (Anchorage, Alaska) stopped 27 shots in the loss. Denver now needs a win on Saturday to retain possession of the Gold Pan Trophy.

Archie Skalbeck, William Rapuzzi and Alexander Krushelnyski scored for Colorado College. Joe Howe made 26 saves for the Tigers.

The Pioneers got in a big hole early when Skalbeck netted Eamonn McDermott's pass at 13:18 to put CC up 1-0. Rapuzzi scored the Tigers' second goal of the period soon after, taking a Rylan Schwartz assist at 14:14 and putting CC up 2-0. Denver was outshot 13-5 in the period and trailed 2-0 going into the first intermission.

Denver struck back in the second period when Drew Shore scored at 4:54 from Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla.) and closed the CC lead to 2-1. The Pioneers were unable to tie it up in the period and Colorado College regained a two-goal advantage when Krushelnyski scored at 14:58 from Gabe Guentzel giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead after two periods of play.

Kyle Ostrow's power-play goal from Zucker at 19:37 in the third period got the Pioneers back within a goal at 3-2.

CC outshot DU, 32-28, and went 0-for-5 on the power play in the game. DU finished 1-for-6 with the man-advantage.

Denver hosts the Tigers Saturday night in the series finale. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. MT at Magness Arena.

Notes: Denver is No. 2 in the latest PairWise rankings. Kyle Ostrow needs two points to join the 100-point club for his career. The loss for Adam Murray was his first in his last five starts.
