Box Score DENVER - No. 2/3 Denver responded to
Jesse Martin's (Edmonton, Alberta) first-period speech with four unanswered goals, two coming from
Nick Shore (Denver), in a 5-3 win over No. 20 Colorado College Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd at Magness Arena.
Denver moves to 17-6-5 overall and 13-4-3 in the WCHA. Colorado College goes to 16-13-1, 10-10-0. The win keeps the Gold Pan Trophy in the Pioneer trophy case for another season and gives Denver a share of the WCHA lead, joining Minnesota Duluth with 29 points.
"What Jesse said during that break seemed to really give us some life," Denver head coach George Gwozdecky said. "All of the sudden the whole tide turned, we had energy and we had a great finish."
Luke Salazar (Thornton, Colo.) tallied the game-winner and Drew Shore (Denver) added a goal and an assist in the victory. Sam Brittain (Calgary, Alberta) stopped a career-high 36 shots for Denver.
Mike Boivin, Dakota Eveland and Scott Winkler scored for Colorado College. Joe Howe made 26 saves for the Tigers.
Denver fell behind 2-0 early in the first period when Boivin scored at 2:34 from Alexander Krushelnyski and Eveland netted an unassisted goal at 4:42. Then it was Denver's turn. Martin thanked DU fans for their support during the second TV timeout of the first period and the Pioneers got it to 2-1 when Nick Shore scored at 17:16 from Beau Bennett (Gardena, Calif.). Minutes later, Shore bagged his second goal of the period, this time on the power play, taking a pass from Kyle Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta) at 18:23 and sending the game into the first intermission tied 2-2.
Denver continued to pour it on in the second period when Mermis flipped a nifty backhander from Shawn Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta) into the net at 6:32 and gave the Pioneers their first lead of the night at 3-2. Salazar got into the action soon after scoring from John Lee (Moorehead, Minn.) at 7:58 and giving DU a 4-2 lead.
CC stopped the bleeding when Winkler scored from Tyler Johnson at 13:57 and made the game 4-3, but Denver followed the Tiger score up with a Drew Shore power-play goal at 17:23 from Anthony Maiani (Shelby Township, Mich.) to give the Pioneers the 5-3 advantage.
CC outshot DU, 39-31, and went 0-for-4 on the power play in the game. DU finished 2-for-4 with the man-advantage.
Denver faces the University of Minnesota Feb. 11-12 in Minneapolis.
Notes: Denver is ranked 6th in the latest PairWise rankings. Kyle Ostrow has 12 points during his career-high, nine-game point streak and needs one point to join the 100-point club for his career. Nick Shore extended his point streak to five games. Jason Zucker (Las Vegas) and Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla.) both extended their point streaks to three games.
