Denver Drops 16-15 Heartbreaker in Three Overtimes

HAMDEN, Conn. - University of Denver women's lacrosse redshirt sophomore Kara Secora (Denver, Colo.) had five goals and five assists, but the Pioneers lost a 16-15 heartbreaker to Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon.
Secora's 10 points in the game tied the second best single-game performance in Denver history and the most points since Steph Coyne had 10 points against Colgate on March 16, 2008.
Quinnipiac (6-3) jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the first 12 minutes, but Denver (3-9) scored six-straight goals to take the lead.
The Bobcats reclaimed the lead early in the second half before senior midfielder Tulley Stapp (Denver, Colo.) scored her third goal to tie the game again.
Once again, Quinnipiac jumped to a three-goal lead, but Secora scored two goals and assisted on two more over a 6:15 stretch to knot the game at 13-13 with 8:37 remaining in regulation.
Lianne Toomey scored with 4:27 left to give the Bobcats a one-goal edge before junior Lauren Ciccomascolo (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) forced overtime with an unassisted goal with 1:01 left.
Quinnipiac's Marissa Caroleo found the back of the net with 22 seconds left in the first overtime, but Secora forced a third overtime on a goal with only 44 seconds on the clock.
Lauren Matuszczak scored the game-winner for the Bobcats with 2:44 left in the third overtime with an assist from Sarah Allen.
Freshman midfielder Annabelle Gilbride (Alexandria, Va.) added two goals, four caused turnovers, three ground balls and an assist in Denver's final nonconference game of the season.
The Pioneers head West for a three-game road trip against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation foes Stanford on April 8, UC Davis on April 10 and Fresno State on April 11.
