Pioneers Fall 3-0 to Arizona State to Open Season

TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Denver volleyball team (0-1) opened the 2011 season, falling 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-23) to Arizona State (1-0) in the second match of the Sheraton Classic in the Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz., on Friday evening.

Junior Faimie Kingsley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with nine kills and four blocks, while senior Alyssa Bonelli (Superior, Colo.), redshirt freshman Cassie Ronda (Chandler, Ariz.) and freshman Kate Acker (Waukesha, Wis.) contributed six kills apiece.

Redshirt senior Julia Cawthra (Lakewood, Colo.) finished the match with 27 assists and nine digs, while junior Lyndi Johnson (Flower Mound, Texas), freshman Samantha Berger (Omaha, Neb.) and Acker all finished with eight digs each.

DU continues tournament action tomorrow as it takes on San Jose State at 11 a.m. MT and then concludes the tournament with a 6:30 p.m. MT match against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers.
