Pioneers Split on Final Day of Sheraton Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. - After defeating San Jose State University in its first match of the day, the University of Denver volleyball team fell 3-2 (25-17, 15-25, 25-16, 23-25, 13-15) to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in its final match of the Sheraton Classic, hosted by Arizona State University at the Wells Fargo Center in Tempe, Ariz.

Junior Faimie Kingsley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Pioneers for the day with 24 kills and 16 total blocks, while senior Alyssa Bonelli (Superior, Colo.) finished with 23 kills and eight blocks. Sophomore Alex Turgeon (Cherry Hills Village, Colo.) contributed with 20 kills and seven digs, while freshman Kate Acker (Waukesha, Wis.) posted 16 kills and 26 digs.

Defensively, junior Lyndi Johnson (Flower Mound, Texas) led the way with 53 digs, while redshirt senior Julia Cawthra (Lakewood, Colo.) finished with 78 assists.

In the first match of the day, the Pioneers were able to record their first victory of the, recovering from their Friday night loss to Arizona State, to defeat San Jose State 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 16-25, 25-19).

After winning the first two sets by the closest of margins, the Pioneers were challenged in the third set as the Spartans recorded an 82 percent team attack percentage and attempted to swing the momentum their way. Fortunately for DU, they were able to withstand the late surge, using a heavy dose of teamwork combined with a bit of composure to close out SJSU 25-19 in the final set to secure the victory.

In the first match, Bonelli and Turgeon led the Pioneers with 11 kills apiece, while Acker contributed 10 kills, 10 digs and three assists. Cawthra led the Pioneers in assists with 35, while also recording six kills and two digs. Johnson led all Pioneers in digs with 24, while also tallying seven assists. Kingsley also gave DU a huge push with her nine kills, while Bonelli dished out five blocks.

Kingsley led the Pioneers in their second match of the day, recording 15 kills and 14 blocks, while Bonelli finished with 12 kills and three blocks. Sophomore Colleen King (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) finished with seven kills and eight blocks, while Acker finished with six kills and 16 digs. Defensively, Johnson led the way once again with 29 digs, while Cawthra finished with 43 assists.

The Pioneers return home to host the Denver Invitational at Hamilton Gymnasium. Denver welcomes Bryant, Purdue and Air Force to the annual tournament. The Pioneers will open the action on Thursday, Sept. 1 against Air Force at 7 p.m.
