CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - No. 67 Drake beat Denver 4-1 in men's tennis action Saturday to finish the Harvard Kick Off in Cambridge, Mass. The Pioneers fall to 1-4 with the loss, while Drake improves to 2-1.
"With two starters out of the lineup, we still had a very good chance to win the match," DU head coach Danny Westerman said. "Our guys showed tremendous resiliency and I'm very proud to coach this team."
Junior Jens Vorkefeld (Ostercappeln, Germany) beat Drake’s James McKie 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles to give the Pioneers their lone point of the match.
Othar Kordsachia (Hamburg, Germany) fell to Robin Goodman 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles, Max Krammer (Perchtoldsdorf, Austria) lost to Ben Mullis 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5 singles, and Luke Manley (Edmonton, Alberta) was edged by Jonathan Hadash 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
Yannick Weihs (Guntramsdorf, Austria) and Fabio Biasion (Velbert, Germany) did not complete their singles matches.
In doubles action, Kordsachia and Weihs were downed by Anis Ghorbel and McKie 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, while Biasion and Krammer fell to Drake’s Cesar Brancho and Alen Salibasic 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.
Friday afternoon the Pioneers played a singles match against No. 66 DePaul, losing 4-1. Krammer got the lone point for Denver, defeating Aaron Chaffee 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Denver’s doubles match versus DePaul was not played Saturday morning after DePaul clinched the victory Friday evening.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 3:00 p.m. MT as Denver hosts Oregon at Denver Country Club.
