Denver Tops UTSA in Four Sets

Box Score

DENVER - The University of Denver volleyball team earned a four-set victory (25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19) over UTSA on Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Gymnasium. With the win, the Pioneers moved to 4-0 at home, 10-9 overall and 4-5 in Western Athletic Conference play, while the Roadrunners fell to 12-7, 5-4 in WAC competition.

"I thought it was a match between two evenly matched teams," said DU head coach Jesse Mahoney. "UTSA has a couple players that I think are two of the best players in our conference, and our game plan was to slow them down. I thought we did that this afternoon. We always do a nice job siding out, and once we were able to really point score, we were able to create a little bit of separation in the third and fourth set."

Senior Faimie Kingsley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied a team-high 14 kills, while juniors Colleen King (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) and Alex Turgeon (Cherry Hills Village, Colo.) also finished in double figures with 11 and 10, respectively. Kingsley added a match-high eight blocks on the afternoon.

For the second-consecutive match, sophomore Kate Acker (Waukesha, Wis.) tallied 10 digs. Classmates Frances Carroll (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) and Bailey Karst (Aurora, Colo.) added nine and seven, respectively. Karst also had 26 assists, while Carroll finished with 22.

UTSA's Whitney Walls led the match with 19 kills, and Brandy Huskey had a game-high 38 assists and 17 digs.

The Pioneers return to the road next week, beginning the two-match swing at Louisiana Tech on Thursday at 6 p.m. MT.
