Box Score DENVER - Led by a combined effort of 25 kills from juniors Colleen King (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) and Alex Turgeon (Cherry Hills Village, Colo.), the University of Denver volleyball team defeated Louisiana Tech 3-1 (25-13, 25-20, 22-25, 25-13) on the road on Thursday evening in Ruston, La. The Pioneers improve to 11-9 on the season, 5-5 in Western Athletic Conference action, while the Lady Techsters now fall to 3-19, 0-10 in league play.
"We played a very solid match tonight to get a much needed road win in this conference," said head coach Jesse Mahoney. "Offensively we were dominant at times with great numbers from Fai and Colleen. We got efficient performances from our left side hitters as well. We've settled on a consistent line-up and our players are more and more comfortable each match. UTA will be a tough test on Saturday."
The win also makes it the first conference road win for the Pioneers this season, who were previously 0- 5.
Along with the 15 kills, King also finished with three blocks and three digs, while Turgeon finished with three blocks and four digs to go along with 10 kills. Senior Faimie Kingsley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished the night with eight total blocks to go along with nine kills and two digs. Freshman Michele Swope (Orlando, Fla.) also finished with nine kills to go along with 10 digs.
Libero Kate Acker (Waukesha, Wis.) led the way defensively with 19 digs, while setters Bailey Karst (Aurora, Colo.) and Frances Carroll (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) finished with 27 and 15 assists, respectively.
Fenix Calderon led Louisiana Tech with 11 kills, while Regan Himmelberg and Clara Vido both finished with nine kills each.
The Pioneers remain on the road, traveling to Arlington, Texas, to take on UTA at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
