Pioneers Down Mavericks 3-1

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas - Led by a combined 42 kills from junior Colleen King (Steamboat Springs, Colo.), senior Faimie Kingsley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and freshman Michele Swope (Orlando, Fla.), the University of Denver volleyball team extended its winning streak to four matches with a 3-1 win over the University of Texas Arlington on the road.

The Pioneers defeated the Mavericks with scores of 23-25, 25-22, 25-20 and 25-23 at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas. The win improves the Pioneers to 12-9 on the season, 6-5 in the Western Athletic Conference. UTA sits at 8-15 overall, 4-7 in league play.

"Every match in this league is a battle, especially on the road," said head coach Jesse Mahoney. "I'm proud of our team winning three close competitive sets in crunch time. Kate Acker had a great defensive performance and we got a lift from the return of Lyndi Johnson to the back row as well. They had no answer for Colleen King tonight. She carried us for a large portion of the match."

King led the way with 19 kills, while Kingsley finished with 12 to go along with Swope's 11. Kingsley also finished the night with eight blocks while junior Brea Muhle (Columbus, Neb.) finished with six blocks, seven kills and four digs. Defensively, libero Kate Acker (Waukesha, Wis.) tallied 24 digs, while senior Lyndi Johnson (Flower Mound, Texas) and Swope added 13 and 11 digs, respectively.

Setters Bailey Karst (Aurora, Colo.) and Frances Carroll (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) finished the day splitting the setter duties. Karst tallied 29 assists, while Carroll finished with 24.

Shelby Dickson led the Mavericks with 11 kills.
