Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The University of Denver men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss at Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday night at Main Soccer Field.
"We lost to a very good Bakersfield team on the road tonight," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "I was a little disappointed in the way we came out in the first 25 minutes, but I was proud of how the guys responded after going down 2-0. I thought that we really got into the attack in the second half, we just couldn't put it all together tonight."
Justin Finch converted a penalty kick to put the Roadrunners on the board in the 28th minute. The goal was Finch's first of the season.
CSUB (8-4-4, 5-3-0 MPSF, 15 pts.) got a second goal before the intermission on a counter attack down the left flank, as David Velasquez found the back of the net on assists from Gyasi Zardes and Lucas Dall'Orso. With the assist, Zardes pushed his MPSF-leading point total to 36.
Denver's (8-5-3, 3-4-1 MPSF, 10 pts.) best chance came five minutes into the second half, as junior forward Zach Bolden (Denver, Colo.) found some space to get his shot off, but it screamed just wide of the post. Bolden had another chance in the 55th minute, but CSUB keeper Eric Shannon made one of his two saves on the evening to keep it out.
The Roadrunners outshot the Pioneers 16-10 in a match that also saw 32 fouls and six cautions.
DU remains on the road this Sunday, as the Pioneers travel to UNLV for a 2 p.m. MT kickoff.
