Pioneers Top Oregon 73-62 for Third Straight Win

EUGENE, Ore. -  Six Pioneers finished the game in double-figures, as the University of Denver women's basketball team tallied its third-straight win of the 2012-13 season Sunday afternoon, with a 73-62 victory over Oregon at the Matt Knight Arena. The win brings Denver's record to 3-3 on the season, while Oregon falls to 0-6.

Freshman Kailey Edwards (Broomfield, Colo.) set a new career high with 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Sophomore Jordan Johnston (Waterloo, Iowa) led Denver with 13 points. Senior Emiko Smith (Los Angeles, Calif.) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 assists.

The Duck were led by Megan Carpenter, who finished with 19 points and 17 rebounds. Danielle Love added 15 points.

"It was a great team effort," said head coach Kerry Cremeans. "When you have six players score in double-figures, that's exciting basketball. That's sharing the basketball, finding open shots, and having confidence offensively."

Sophomore Morgan Van Riper-Rose (Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored all 10 of her points in the second half, while sophomore Theresa Wirth (Mesa, Ariz.) set a career high with 10 rebounds, and added a career high 12 points. Junior Alison Janecek set a career high with 11 points, on 5-of-6 shooting, including her first career three-pointer.

The Pioneers fell behind 5-0 early, but responded with a 13-2 run, fueled by seven points from Edwards, to take a 13-7 lead. Denver remained in control from there, taking a 37-29 lead into the break.

Johnston shot 3-of-3 from three-point range to lead Denver with 10 first-half points, while Edwards added nine. Carpenter finished the opening frame with 12 points and eight rebounds. The Pioneers shot 40.6 percent (13-of-32) in the first half, compared to 26.8 percent (11-of-41) for the Ducks.

Oregon cut the lead to three in the second half, Denver was able to stretch the lead back to double figures at 67-56 with 5:56 remaining. The Pioneers never looked back from there, taking the 11-point win.

Denver shot 40.9 percent (27-of-66), compared to 31.9 percent (23-of-72) for the Ducks. Oregon out-rebounded DU 55-39 on the afternoon.

Denver will return to action Wednesday, when it travels to take on Minnesota. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. MT.
