Box Score DENVER - Five Pioneers finished in double figures for the second straight game as the University of Denver women's basketball team got its first Western Athletic Conference victory of the season, 90-52 over Texas Arlington Monday afternoon at Magness Arena. The win moves Denver to 6-7 and 1-1 in WAC play, while the Mavericks fall to 3-9 overall and 1-1 in WAC action.
The Pioneers shot 49.2 percent (32-of-65), while the Mavericks shot 34.4 percent (21-of-61)
The 90 points was the most the Pioneers have scored since they defeated Utah Valley 101-75 on Jan. 8, 2008. The 38 point margin of victory was the fifth-largest in Denver's Division I history and the biggest since the 2010-11 season.
Junior Quincey Noonan (Broomfield, Colo.) set a new season-high with a game-high 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting. She was followed by classmate Maiya Michel (Loma Linda, Calif.), who recorded her second straight double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Michel's 15 points matched her career high that she set against Louisiana Tech on Saturday.
Sophomore Morgan Van Riper-Rose (Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored 14 points, while fellow sophomore Jordan Johnston (Waterloo, Iowa) added 13. Sophomore Theresa Wirth (Mesa, Ariz.) rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points.
Laila Suleiman led UT Arlington with nine points, while Eboni Watkins and Chauntandra Williams scored seven points apiece.
"Tonight we emphasized pushing the basketball in transition," said head coach Kerry Cremeans. "We wanted to push the ball in both halves, and finish the game playing up-tempo. We did that today. On the defensive end we battled for rebounds, and we know rebounding the basketball is key for us."
Senior Emiko Smith (Los Angeles, Calif.) tallied eight points and a game-high six assists, while junior Alison Janecek recorded seven points and seven rebounds in her first career start.
UT Arlington jumped out to an early 13-10 lead, but Denver responded with nine unanswered points, to take a 19-13 lead just under eight minutes in. The Pioneers followed that up with a 9-2 run that stretched their lead to double-digits at 34-21. Denver ended the half on a 9-1 run, taking a 48-32 edge into the intermission.
Michel and Van Riper-Rose led all scorers with nine first-half points apiece. Michel also tallied seven rebounds, while Johnston and Janecek recorded eight and seven points, respectively.
Denver shot 50 percent (18-of-36) in the opening stanza, compared to 43.8 percent (14-of-32) for UT Arlington.
The Pioneers scored eight straight points to start the second half, extending their run that began with 1:32 left in the first half to 17-1 and stretching the lead to 56-32. Denver never looked back from there as it took the 38-point victory.
Denver will return to action Thursday when it travels to take on Texas State. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. MT.
