DENVER - The University of Denver earned a much needed win over New Mexico Sunday afternoon at Pinehurst Country Club. The Pioneers beat the Lobos 4-3 after suffering a frustrating 7-0 loss to BYU on Feb. 24.
"We have been on the wrong side of a lot of close matches and it's great to come through with a win today," DU head coach Danny Westerman. "We have a resilient team and when a team continues to work hard and compete well, the wins will eventually come. It was a great team effort and I was pleased with our mentality from each guy 1-10."
New Mexico jumped to a 1-0 lead after sweeping the three doubles matches. Denver stormed back to win the match as Enej Bonin (Koper, Slovenia), Yannick Weihs (Guntramsdorf, Austria), Jens Vorkefeld (Ostercappeln, Germany) and Fabio Biasion (Velbert, Germany) recorded singles wins.
Bonin beat Ben Dunbar 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and Weihs beat No. 81 Jadon Phillips 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2. Vorkefeld beat Phil Anderson 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 and Biasion outlasted Samir Iftikhar 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5.
Denver (4-7) returns to action at Purdue on Friday, March 2.
