Pioneers Finding Their Groove

EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 70 Denver posted its third-straight win with a 4-3 decision over No. 49 Northwestern in nonconference men's tennis action Sunday afternoon at Combe Tennis Center. DU improves to 6-7 with its second consecutive win over a Big 10 opponent, while Northwestern falls to 7-4.

"We had another close match today that could have gone either way," DU head coach Danny Westerman said. "We have lost a few of these early this season, but being in those tough matches prepared us for this opportunity. We saved multiple match points in doubles and we're very proud of the way we are competing right now."

Denver clinched the doubles point when Max Krammer (Perchtoldsdorf, Austria) and Fabio Biasion (Velbert, Germany) defeated Sidarth Balaji and Chris Jackman, 9-8, after a 16-14 tiebreaker.

After a Jackman win at No. 5 tied the match at 1-1, Yannick Weihs (Guntramsdorf, Austria) beat Raleigh Smith 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2.

The Wildcats took a 3-2 lead with wins at No. 3 and No. 6, but DU rallied for the match victory with wins from Krammer at No. 4 and Enej Bonin (Koper, Slovenia) at No. 1. Krammer beat Alex Pasareanu 7-5, 6-4 and Bonin outlasted Spencer Wolf 7-6, 6-7, 6-1 to clinch the win.

Denver returns to action on Friday, March 9 against Utah. First serve at Gates Tennis Center is set for 12 p.m. MT.
