Matthews Becomes Denver's All-Time Points Leader

DENVER - After his seven-point performance in Friday's 15-9 upset victory over the Duke Blue Devils, University of Denver senior attackman Mark Matthews (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada) continued his climb up the career charts at DU. Along with defeating the Atlantic Coast Conference's regular-season and tournament champions, Matthews surpassed DU alumnus Todd Dickson (1990-93) as the school's all-time leader in both points and goals scored.

Matthews, who already holds the top marks for career points and goals scored in Denver Division-I history, now has posted 205 points and 145 goals during his four-year career. The senior ranks second nationally among active career leaders in goals and is fifth in points. Matthews is also fourth in Denver history in career assists (60).

Fellow-senior Alex Demopoulos (Canton, Conn.) has also made a steady rise in the DU record books, as he now holds the all-time mark for career assists (78). Demopoulos ranks fourth all-time in Denver history in career points (168) and is sixth in career goals scored (90).

Demopoulos and Matthews have both left their marks on the lacrosse program at DU, with games still left to be played. Matthews is currently the Denver Division-I leader in career points, as well as goals scored. Demopoulos ranks second in Denver D-I history in points and fourth in goals. Demopoulos' 78 career assists are a Denver D-I record, while Matthews sits in third with 60 career assists.

The tandem is preparing to earn its third-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament in four years. Their journey begins this Wednesday, as the Eastern College Athletic Conference regular-season champion Loyola (Md.) comes to town as the tournament's top-seeded team. The Pioneers and the Greyhounds will face-off at 5 p.m. MT at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, with a trip to the ECAC Tournament Championship game on the line.
