DENVER - The University of Denver men's golf program will play in nine regular-season tournaments before competing in its first Western Athletic Conference Championship, head coach Eric Hoos announced today.
"Our upcoming tournament season allows us the opportunity to compete against some of the best teams in the nation," Hoos said. "The team and I are looking forward to a challenging season ahead, and the opportunity to compete in our first WAC Championship."
Denver will stay in Colorado for its first two tournaments of the 2012-13 season when it plays in the Ram Masters Invitational (Sept. 17-18) in Fort Collins, and the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational (Sept. 24-25) in Erie.
In October, the Pioneers will travel to San Antonio, Texas, to play in the Lone Star Invitational (Oct. 14-16), followed by a trip to Stockton, Calif., for the 6th Annual Pacific Invitational.
After taking the winter off, the Pioneers will resume their schedule on February 11 with the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Golf Invitational (Feb. 11-12). DU will then play in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate (Feb. 20-22) in Honolulu, Hawaii. This is the 12th-straight season the Pioneers will play in the event.
The Pioneers will then host the 2013 Desert Shootout (Mar. 21-23) in Goodyear, Ariz., a tournament that enters its fifth chapter this spring. DU won the tournament title in 2009.
Two weeks later, the Pioneers will return to Arizona to compete in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. Denver will then wrap-up the regular season in the 67th Western Intercollegiate (Apr. 29-May1) to be played in Santa Cruz, Calif.
DU's first crack at a WAC Championship will tee off on April 29 in Henderson, Nev. The three-day tournament will be played at the Rio Secco Golf Club.
The 2013 NCAA Regional Championships are slated for May 16-18, while the 2013 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship will be decided at the Capital City Club in Atlanta, Ga.
