Denver Falls to No. 21 Kansas State

OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Denver Pioneers fell 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-19) to No. 21 Kansas State in the opening match of the Bluejay Invitational, hosted by Creighton University at the D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Neb. Junior Colleen King (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) led the Pioneers with nine kills, while freshman Michele Swope (Orlando, Fla.) added six kills and a block.
The loss drops the Pioneers to 2-2 on the season while Kansas State improves to 4-0.
"Kansas State is a great team that puts pressure on you in all phases of the game," said head coach Jesse Mahoney. "We knew we had to win the serve-pass battle to give ourselves an opportunity to be successful and we weren't able to accomplish that goal. We will have to play better than this tomorrow as both Syracuse and Creighton are very solid, physical teams."
The Pioneers will face Syracuse on Saturday at 9 a.m. and then close out the tournament with a 6:30 p.m. MT match against hosts Creighton.
Sophomore Frances Carroll (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) led the way with 17 assists, while also tallying three kills and two blocks. Senior Lyndi Johnson (Flower Mound, Texas) led the team defensively with nine digs, while also posting four assists.
