Denver Prevails in 2-1 Comeback Win Over Fairfield

Box Score

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of Denver men's soccer freshman Malcolm Harris (Damascus, Md.) scored his first career goal and sophomore midfielder Brian Hoyt (Tempe, Ariz.) had the game-winner, as the Pioneers topped Fairfield 2-1 in the New Mexico Classic on Sunday.

"The team showed a lot of character going from behind to win against a good Fairfield team," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "Although it was not the team's best performance, the most important thing is that they found a way to win the game. We have an important week of preparation ahead of us as we begin conference play against a very good Air Force team on the road."

Fairfield (3-4-0) struck first, when Jordan Ayris scored off a deflection from seven yards out in the 12th minute.

Harris scored the equalizer in the 27th minute for the Pioneers (5-1-2), burying a cross from freshman midfielder Jordan Schweitzer (Everett, Wash.).

Hoyt slid into a deflection off the goalkeeper and scored from point blank to give the Pioneers the win.

Denver, which has won five-straight games, dominated the statistics. DU outshot the Stags 19-12 and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior midfielder Mark Weigand (Fort Wayne, Ind.), senior forward Josh Wren (Tulsa, Okla.) and junior defender Blair Jeralds (Clemmons, N.C.) were all named to the 2012 Nike Lobo Invitational All-Tournament Team.

The Pioneers begin Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action next weekend, when they head to Air Force on Saturday for a 7 p.m. MT match.
