Pioneers Take 75-73 Win Over Roadrunners

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Led by a 22-point effort from sophomore Morgan Van Riper-Rose (Eden Prairie, Minn.) the University of Denver women's basketball team defeated the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners 75-73 on the road on Saturday evening from the Convocation Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The win is the third-straight for the Pioneers and brings their overall record to 8-7, 3-1 in Western Athletic Conference action. The loss drops the Roadrunners to 7-8, 1-3 in league play.

Along with Van Riper-Rose's efforts, sophomore Jordan Johnston (Waterloo, Iowa) tied her career-high with 14 points, while also grabbing five rebounds. Junior Alison Janecek (Omaha, Neb.) finished with 12 points and tied her career-high of 10 rebounds to finish with her first career double-double.

Rounding out the double-figure scoring was senior Emiko Smith (Los Angeles, Calif.) as she finished with 11 points and five assists.

Van Riper-Rose's 22 points marks the fifth time this season that she's finished with 20+ points, eighth of her career. It was also the fourth straight game that the Pioneers have had four or more players in double figures.

Kamra King led the Roadrunners with 18 points, while Miki Turner and Lyndi Thorman both finished with 12 points each.

"It was all about toughness tonight," said head coach Kerry Cremeans. "Anytime you're playing on the road against a team like UTSA, which is strong and athletic, it's going to be all about toughness."

The Pioneers held a two-point advantage coming into the second half and used a 17-6 run to take a 14-point lead with 12 minutes left in the game. The Roadrunners battled back to within three points with four minutes left to play. Denver continued to hold the Roadrunners at bay until the final seconds when UTSA sank a three-pointer with two seconds left to pull within two points.

Van Riper-Rose led all scorers in the first half with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field, 2-of-3 from long distance. Janecek led the Pioneers with seven rebounds, while also netting five points.
