Box Score DENVER – Led by 11 kills and a match-high .714 hitting percentage from senior Brea Muhle (Columbus, Neb.), the University of Denver volleyball team improved to 6-1 in The Summit League with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Western Illinois on Sunday afternoon from Hamilton Gymnasium.
The win improves the Pioneers to 12-8 on the season, while the Leathernecks sit at 9-13 overall, 3-4 in league play. Denver took the first set 25-13, the second set 25-9 and the final set 25-19.
“It was a good match for us,” said head coach Jesse Mahoney. “Even though we beat Omaha on Friday night, we didn’t play very crisply. Our challenge today was to play good focused volleyball and we did that in set one and two. Especially in set two, we played at a very high level, low error and very focused.”
Also chipping in for the Pioneers was freshman Moni Corrujedo (El Paso, Texas) with 10 kills and four digs, while senior Colleen King (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) finished with seven kills, 15 assists, five digs and three blocks.
Sophomore setter Tori Moons (Visalia, Calif.) finished with 18 assists and six digs, while freshman Nola Basey (Lyons, Colo.) finished with four kills, six digs and three service aces. Denver finished with nine service aces, the most this season, as sophomore Hannah Safari (Boulder, Colo.) accounted for three of them.
Heather Smith led the Leathernecks with seven kills, while setter Sarah Fetter finished with 20 assists.
Denver heads back on the road to take on Fort Wayne on Friday, Oct. 25 at 5 p.m. MT, and then IUPUI on Saturday at 3 p.m. MT.
SUMMIT LEAGUE UPDATE
Denver sits at 12-8 on the season, 6-1 in league play. South Dakota leads the league with a 15-6 overall mark and a perfect 6-0 record in league play. The Pioneers follow the Coyotes, while IUPUI sits in third with a 5-2 mark in league action, 11-12 overall.
The Pioneers’ 6-1 mark in league play is the best conference start since the 2008 season in which the Pioneers finished 14-4 in the Sun Belt Conference and 25-7 overall.
