Box Score DENVER – The University of Denver volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 26-24) to conference opponent Fort Wayne on the road on Friday evening at the Gate Sports Center in Fort Wayne, Ind. The loss drops the Pioneers to 12-9 on the season, 6-2 in The Summit League and in a tie for second place with IUPUI.
“It was a tough road loss tonight against a very solid team in Fort Wayne, who has yet to lose at home this season,” said head coach Jesse Mahoney. “We attacked at a high rate in the side-out game but were unable to get a rhythm defensively until the third set. By then it was too late.”
Senior Colleen King (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) led the Pioneers with 15 kills and a .556 hitting percentage to go along with 12 assists, five digs and a block.
Freshman Moni Corrujedo (El Paso, Texas) finished with eight kills and two blocks, while sophomore transfer Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and senior Brea Muhle (Columbus, Neb.) both chipped in with six kills and two blocks each.
Sophomore setter Tori Moons (Visalia, Calif.) led the way with 22 assists, while freshman Nola Basey (Lyons, Colo.) finished with 13 digs.
Emily Spencer led Fort Wayne with 19 kills, while Sarah Heckman chipped in with 10. Setter Madison Spence finished with 41 assists on the night.
Denver remains on the road, traveling to Indianapolis, Ind., to take on IUPUI on Saturday at 3 p.m. MT.
“IUPUI will be a tough match tomorrow on a short turnaround and we will look to regroup and play better,” Mahoney said.
