Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – Led by a career-high 19 kills from freshman Moni Corrujedo (El Paso, Texas), the University of Denver volleyball team completed its final weekend of The Summit League play with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-20) sweep of Omaha on Sunday afternoon on the road.
The win brings the Pioneers to 16-11 overall, 10-4 in The Summit League, while the Mavericks fall to 7-22, 2-12 in league play. Denver now sits in sole possession of second place with IUPUI leading the league with an 11-3 league mark. South Dakota sits in a tie for third with Fort Wayne with 9-5 league marks, while Western Illinois and North Dakota State are tied for fifth with 6-8 marks.
“Great win on the road by our squad,” said head coach Jesse Mahoney. “Moni had a monster match and carried us with 19 kills. We created a lot of pressure on UNO from the service line leading to a lot of easy transition opportunities. Our focus now is on playing well this coming weekend when it really counts.”
Along with her 19 kills, Corrujedo also finished with a team-high .410 hitting percentage on the day to go along with nine digs. The freshman led the Pioneers in kills in all three sets, finishing with eight in the first set, six in the second and five in the third.
Also chipping in offensively was freshman Nola Basey (Lyons, Colo.) and senior Cassie Ronda (Chandler, Ariz.) with eight kills each. Ronda, along with sophomore Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) both finished with three blocks each.
Sophomore setter Tori Moons (Visalia, Calif.) posted her second-highest assist total of the season with 39, while junior liber Kate Acker (Waukesha, Wis.) finished with 13 digs. Moons also tallied 10 digs.
Michaela Schimmer lead the Mavericks with nine kills, while setter Bailey Baxter finished with 17 assists.
Up next, the Pioneers await the seeding announcement from The Summit League. The tournament runs from Friday, Nov. 22 to Sunday, Nov. 24 at IUPUI in Indianapolis, Ind.
