Denver Golf Sign Four to National Letters of Intent

DENVER – University of Denver men’s golf head coach Eric Hoos announced that 2014 incoming freshmen Johan Werge (San Luis Potosi, Mex.), Jake Kelley (Littleton, Colo.), Chris Korte (Littleton, Colo.), and Matt Codd (Red Deer, Alberta) have signed National Letters of Intent to compete for the Pioneers beginning in 2014-15.

“This is probably the best class we have signed to date,” said head coach Eric Hoos. “Watching all of these players the past year I was really impressed with their talent, competitive nature and tireless work ethic.  They all truly love the game and have the passion needed to be on the top of the leader board.   We have two seniors graduating this year and I’m looking for these guys to contribute right away, along with providing more competition for the traveling (roster).  I’m sure there will be plenty of battles on the course to see who will be the top player of the class; it will be fun to watch.”

Werge joins the Pioneers as a three time NO. 1 ranked Mexican Golfer in 2007, 2009 and 2011. (view complete bio here)

“Johan is the highest ranked player of the signing class,” said Hoos. “A fluid swing, a terrific chipper and putter, to go along with a lot of tournament experience makes him someone that the Pioneers can count on from the start.  I’m looking for him to push his teammates to be their best.”

Local product of Regis Jesuit H.S., Kelley has competed in the Optimist International Golf Championship, also has competed at the 5A CHSAA State Championship where he finished second. (view complete bio here)

“Jake has really elevated his game in the last couple of years and is coming into his own,” said Hoos. “With more tournaments and practice to go along with his strong competitive nature and work ethic, lower scores are sure to come. Jake has tremendous upside and I’m excited to watch him develop his game over the next four years.”

Korte, a Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour Major Champion, represented Colorado at the Junior America’s Cup, and was team captain of the Regis Jesuit H.S. golf team that won the Colorado state championship. (view complete bio here)

“Christopher has a solid game that holds up well under pressure and I am really impressed with his putting,” said Hoos.  “He’s a quiet young man but you can tell he’s a tough competitor that wants to beat everyone once he steps to the tees.  He’s started to work out and once he adds some power to his game, he can take that next step to becoming a standout player.”

As a former competitor on the European Cup team in Scotland, Codd hails from Canada and will bring a H.S. Provincials Championship, and an Alberta Junior Masters title to the Pioneers. (view complete bio here)

“Matt possesses solid swing mechanics, power, touch and confidence which will allow him to play any type of course,” said Hoos. “Currently he is taking a year off after high school to work on his game and I’m really excited to see the progress.”

The Denver men’s golf team return to action in February for the Farms Collegiate Invitational hosted in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Feb. 10-11.
