DENVER - The University of Denver hockey program lost one of its own on Monday night, as former player Joe Casey passed away at the age of 37 in Jackson Hole, Wy.
The cause of death is still to be determined, but Casey reportedly felt ill over the weekend with what was described as flu-like symptoms. Just two days prior to his passing, Casey tallied a pair of assists while playing for the Jackson Hole Moose, where he had played for the last 13 seasons.
"It is with shock and great sadness to learn of Joe's passing," Denver head coach George Gwozdecky said. "He was a dedicated, enthusiastic and inspirational person who always played the game at full throttle. These qualities endeared him to his teammates and many friends at DU. He will be sorely missed by all."
Casey was a member of the Pioneers from the 1996-97 through 1999-00 seasons and finished his career with 15 goals and 12 assists while seeing action in 78 games. He was voted as the team's most inspirational and as well as its most improved player by his teammates during his senior season.
The former Pioneer was described by his teammates as an avid outdoorsman as well as an avid fan of the Denver Broncos. He grew up in Minnesota and Oklahoma before arriving at the University of Denver.
The viewing is scheduled for Saturday Feb. 9, 2013, from 3:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Valley Mortuary, 950 Alpine Lane, Jackson, Wyoming.
Memorial Service will be held at Snow King Ice Arena, 100 E. Snow King Ave., Jackson, Wyoming, on Sunday Feb. 10, 2013, at 6:00 p.m.
