Kent Anderson Signs with Calgary Wranglers

DU hockey captain inks first professional contract

DENVER – Denver Pioneers hockey senior captain Kent Anderson signed his first professional contract on Friday, inking a one-year contract with the Calgary Wranglers of the American Hockey League.

The Calgary, Alberta, native previously signed an amateur tryout with the Wranglers as a college free agent on April 15 and appeared in two games for his hometown club. He made his professional debut and had a +1 plus-minus rating and two shots on goal on April 17 at the Colorado Eagles and also played in the April 18 contest at Colorado, registering the same stat line. The Wranglers are the top minor-league affiliate of the NHL Calgary Flames.

Anderson, 22, served as the 96th captain in Denver hockey history during the 2025-26 season and guided the program to its 11th national championship and his second as a player. The defenseman recorded four points on two goals and two assists while playing in all 43 games. He also compiled a +13 plus-minus rating, 12 penalty minutes and blocked 40 shots.

He scored his first career overtime goal in double-OT on April 9 against No. 1 Michigan in the NCAA Frozen Four Semifinals to send the Pioneers to the championship contest. Anderson appeared in his 150th career game in that NCAA title game, a 2-1 comeback win against Wisconsin on April 11.

Anderson totaled six goals and 15 assists for 21 points in his four-year career at Denver, where he played in each of the final 113 contests dating back to Jan. 5, 2024. He won his first NCAA Championship with the Pioneers in 2024 and finished his collegiate tenure with a +40 plus-minus rating and 42 penalty minutes.

After appearing in 22 games as a freshman in 2022-23, Anderson began his sophomore campaign by scoring two goals in the season opener on Oct. 7, 2023 at Alaska Fairbanks. He went on add one additional marker and five assists to finish the championship campaign with eight points. He matched his career high with eight points as a junior in 2024-25 (1g/7a) and scored his first game-winning goal in Game 3 of the NCHC Quarterfinals versus Colorado College on March 16, 2025.

Named the recipient of the NCHC Senior Scholar-Athlete Award this past season, Anderson is a four-time member of both the conference Academic Honor Roll and Distinguished Scholar-Athlete list. He has been recognized as a National All-American Scholar in each of the previous three years (announced in the summer) and was named the winner of the 2024 NCAA Elite 90 Award for having the highest cumulative grade-point average at that year's Frozen Four in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Additionally, Anderson was twice named DU hockey's Dr. Art Mason Top Scholar-Athlete (2024 and 2026) and completed his bachelor's degree in business finance in March. He will walk at DU's undergraduate graduation next month in Magness Arena.

Prior to coming to Denver, Anderson suited up for the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League in 2021-22 where he earned USHL All-Rookie Second-Team honors. He also played two additional years of junior hockey with the Drumheller Dragons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League from 2019-2021 and served as an alternate captain in his final season.
