Pioneers Fall to Mavericks in Five Sets

Box Score

BOONE, N.C. – The University of Denver volleyball team fell 3-2 to the UT-Arlington Mavericks in the first match of the Black & Gold Challenge at Holmes Center in Boone, N.C., on Friday afternoon. The loss drops the Pioneers to 5-6 on the season.

“We played well at times in tonight’s match, but couldn’t execute consistently when the match was on the line in the fifth set,” said head coach Jesse Mahoney. “Tori and Colleen filled in admirably for an injured Bailey Karst at the setter position and gave us a chance to win. Tomorrow we will have to play with some energy and discipline defensively against two physical teams.”

Denver posted scores of 25-19 in both the first and third sets, but dropped the second set 25-22, the fourth set 25-23 and the fifth set 15-10.

Senior Colleen King (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) led the Pioneers with 17 kills, while also tallying 20 assists, 12 digs and two blocks. Freshman Moni Corrujedo (El Paso, Texas) finished with 11 kills and 13 digs, while sophomore transfer Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) chipped in with 10 kills.

Sophomore setter Tori Moons (Visalia, Calif.) led the team with 27 assists, while also tallying eight digs and one kill. Defensive specialist Kate Acker (Waukesha, Wis.) posted 21 digs and seven assists.

Denver returns to action on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. MT against East Carolina and then closes out the Black & Gold Challenge against hosts Appalachian State at 5 p.m. MT. Both matches are available via Live Stats and Live Video.
