Oct. 1, 2014 DENVER - When you set a course record, as Isabel Southard did at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Wolcott, Colorado, there is a chance someone will take notice. It certainly caught the attention of the Summit League.
Southard, a personable junior from Sharon, Massachusetts, was named the Summit League golfer of the month for September after shooting a dazzling 6-under 66 during the final round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at the difficult Red Sky Golf Club course. Her score guided the Pioneers to an impressisve third place finish. Southard finished sixth overall in the event.
"Izzy has played great for us this fall, especially in her last four rounds of shooting a total of even par," said Denver head coach Lindsay Kuhle. "She had an exceptional performance in the final round at Red Sky, shooting the course record of 66 and helping our team shoot our team record for 18-holes of 12-under. She had seven birdies that round and was very hot with her putter. Her ball striking has improved a great amount in the past few months and she is more focused and determined than ever." Dedication to the sport and an intense work ethic has helped Southard shape her game. The time and effort the psychology major has put into her game is already paying dividends.
"Izzy is a very hard worker and has improved a lot over this past summer," said Kuhle. "I see Izzy continuing to improve and shooting consistently low scores for our team. She absolutely loves the game of golf and seeing her hard work pay off. We couldn't be more proud of Izzy and the way she came back this year ready to compete."
There are several young, promising golfers on the Pioneers roster and they would certainly do themselves a favor by following the example of Isabel Southard, the Summit League golfer of month. Southard was not the only golfer who did DU proud. On the men's side, Petter Mikalsen took Summit League golfer of the month honors. The University of Denver women's and men's golf teams are clearly on the rise as the month of October begins. - JOIN THE DENVER PIONEER NATION -
