DENVER-

The Pioneers conquered the North Dakota State Bison on their home court Friday night in five hard-fought sets (25-21, 25-18, 21-25, 19-25, 15-13). This eleventh consecutive win improves Denver's season to 16-3 and brings their Summit League record to a perfect 5-0. Led by a combined 28 kills by sophomores Moni Corrujedo (El Paso, Tex.) and Ruth Okoye (Aurora, Colo.), the Denver Pioneers were able to make a comeback after two tough sets, temporarily losing two-time Summit League Offensive Player of the Week, Nola Basey.

The Crimson and Gold returned to the court full of fire for the final rally to 15, scoring 12 of the 16 final points to ultimately top the Bison. This loss brings the opponent's season record to 7-12 (2-4 Summit).

Other stat leaders included senior Bailey Karst who contributed 45 assists and one ace, as well as Sarah Schmid with four blocks and Kate Acker with 28 digs.

"Losing Nola Basey in the second set really threw us through a loop, so we had to change some things up. Cassie Baird came in and did a fantastic job," Coach Jesse Mahoney commented.

He went on to explain of the Pioneers scrambling to take back the win, "Good teams can win when they're playing badly. Somehow we've found a way to do that a couple of times this season. We dug ourselves into a hole in that fifth set, but we were able to play smart and ultimately win."

As the Pioneers head into Sunday, Mahoney hopes this experience sinks in quickly. South Dakota is also undefeated in the Summit League and has the number one outside hitter. "Even on our home floor, we have to play our best match to win," Mahoney concluded.

This Sunday at 2:00 PM, the Denver Pioneers will face the South Dakota Coyotes at home. Live stats will be available via Gametracker.
