Oct. 17, 2014 Fort Wayne, IN- The Denver volleyball team picked up their 18th win of the season in Friday night's 3-2 match against Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne. The two Summit League teams rallied in five sets at Gates Sports Center (25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 18-25, 15-10). This win puts Denver at an 18-3 overall season with a perfect 7-0 record in Summit League play. Additionally, it marks the 15th consecutive win for the Pioneers in the 2014 season.
Sophomore Moni Corrujedo led the Pioneers for the second match in a row tonight by racking up 22 kills over the Mastodons. Junior Sarah Schmid was also a key asset on offense, providing 15 kills at a team-high .467 attack rate. Other stat leaders for Denver included Bailey Karst with 58 assists, Kate Acker with three service aces and 17 digs and Ruth Okoye with five blocks.
From a team standpoint, Denver showcased a few small errors that pushed them into five sets. To DU's advantage, however, while IPFW led in overall points, aces and blocks, the Pioneers were able to fight back and snatch the win through 65 total kills, a .298 hitting percentage (compared to .219 for IPFW) and 64 assists.
"IPFW played very well and we struggled defensively, even in the first two sets. When we controlled the ball, Bailey was able to isolate hitters and that was the difference in the fifth set. This group always finds a way in the fifth," head coach Jesse Mahoney noted.
The Denver Pioneers will play their next match on Sunday at 11 a.m. in Indianapolis' Jungle Stadium, where they will face Summit League opponent Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis.
