FARGO, N.D. - Sophomore Nola Basey (Lyons, Colo.) led the Pioneers with 20 kills during a hard-fought match tonight against the NDSU Bison. The Pioneers battled in four sets (28-30, 25-23, 20-25, 17-25), eventually falling to their opponents, who improved to 11-14 on the season (5-6 in Summit League play). Denver is now 19-5 on the season (8-2 in Summit).
Along with Basey's team-high kills and hitting rate of .258 teammate in the rally, sophomore Moni Corrujedo (El Paso, Texas) added 19 kills to lead the Pioneers in a tough road rally. Senior Bailey Karst also contributed a few different stat leads: in assists (49), block solos (two) and hitting rate (.286). Fellow senior Kate Acker was responsible for 22 of the Pioneers' 79 total digs.
"NDSU played very well, served us tough, and defended well," head coach Jesse Mahoney commented, "We struggled to pass and consequently spent most of the match scrambling and out of system. We've struggled on the road at times this season and it doesn't get any easier coming up on Friday at UNO. Hopefully we will benefit from this and refocus on the work it will take to achieve season goals."
Next, Denver will face Omaha on Friday, October 31 in Lee & Sapp Fieldhouse at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. This match is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. MT. Stats will be available at Omavs.com/liveStats.
