BROOKINGS, SD - Denver took its third conference win Friday night on the road against South Dakota State in four sets (25-19, 25-15, 21-25, 25-16). In addition to being 3-0 in conference play so far, this success also marks the Pioneers' ninth consecutive win of the season.
Sophomore Nola Basey (Lyons, Colo.) had a match-high 25 kills, by far leading the team on offense, while fellow sophomore Ruth Okoye (Aurora, Colo.) added 10 to the 63 total kills against the Jackrabbits.
With the win, the Pioneers moved to 14-3 on the season, the program's best start since Denver began the 2008 campaign with a 15-2 mark. Despite the Pioneers' small errors in service, head coach Jesse Mahoney was satisfied with his team's performance tonight.
"Wins on the road are always at a premium, so we are happy to get the win. It wasn't our best effort defensively or from the service line, but we played well enough offensively to squeak through. Nola was huge tonight," Mahoney commented.
Basey soared past her previous season-high of 16 kills in the match tonight, hitting at a .418 clip with just two errors. Okoye had just three errors, hitting .412 in the four-set match.
Senior setter Bailey Karst (Aurora, Colo.) finished the match with 49 assists and 11 digs.
Denver will play its fourth Summit League conference game at home this Sunday at noon against the University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks in Hamilton Gymnasium.
