INDIANAPOLIS - Joshua Ayala's left-footed blast from 10-yards out in the 76th minute gave IUPUI a 1-0 victory over the University of Denver Friday night in chilly Indianapolis. The Pioneers outshot the Jaguars 17 to 6 and 4 to 2 in shots on goal. DU also held the corner kick advantage 7 to 0 but could not slip one past IUPUI goalkeeper Eduardo Cortes.
"I thought we dictated the match but couldn't find the back of the net and IUPUI buried their chance," said Denver head coach Bobby Muuss. "Every loss is tough."
The Pioneers drop to 8-7-1 overall and 2-2-1 in league play. The Jaguars are now 5-7-3 on the season and 2-2-1 in the Summit League.
Scoring goals against IUPUI was not a problem last year for DU. In two games, the Pioneers bested the Jaguars 4-0 and 5-0 but as Muuss said during the week, "these are two new and different teams, last year doesn't matter."
Next up for the Pioneers will be the regular season finale, a crucial home match against Summit League opponent Western Illinois on November 8th. Denver will put their 14 game CIBER Field winning streak on the line. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
