DENVER - The Denver Pioneers began the final weekend of league play with a win on their home court against top-ranked Summit League team IUPUI. Sophomore Sarah Schmid led the Pioneers with 13 kills at a .545 attack rate. She was in good company with teammates Nola Basey (who provided 11), Erica Denney and Cassie Baird (who provided ten apiece) of the Pioneers' 66 total kills.
Denver glided through the first two sets (25-14, 25-18), before falling in the third after a tremendous rally (28-26). The Pioneers were able to quickly regain composure, topping the Jaguars 25-18 in the fourth. With this win, the Pioneers move on 23-6 (12-3 in Summit).
"We're playing for a conference championship so we needed this win tonight and we need another on Sunday. I was proud of the focused effort from the entire group, especially in sets one and two," head coach Jesse Mahoney noted. "We followed our game plan extremely well and Bailey did a fantastic job of spreading the ball around, which allowed many of the girls on our roster to show their talent."
Other stat leaders for Friday's match included Bailey Karst with 44 assists, Erica Denney with seven blocks, Monique Domme with 16 digs, and Kate Acker with two service aces.
Next, the Pioneers will face IPFW on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. MT in Hamilton Gymnasium. Prior to the match Denver will honor their two seniors, Kate Acker and Bailey Karst with a short ceremony.
